When is Guy Fawkes in New Zealand?

1.Guy Fawkes in New Zealand is celebrated each year on the evening of November 5th.  

뉴질랜드의 가이 폭스 데이는 매년 11월 5일 저녁입니다.

2. Guy Fawkes Night is an old English event and traditionally held with bonfires, fireworks and family or community gatherings. 

전통적으로 가족 혹은 공동체가 모여 모닥불이나 폭죽놀이를 하는 영국의 오래된 전통적인 행사입니다.

The origin of Guy Fawkes dates back to 1605 when a group of 12 men tried to blow up Britain’s House of Parliament.
가이 폭스 데이는 1605년 영국에서 일어난 12명의 사람이 하원을 폭파하려던 것에서 기원합니다.

This event became known as the Gunpowder Plot, and included Mr. Guy Fawkes, who established his reputation as one of Britain’s most notorious traitors.

이 사건은 '화약 음모'로 알려지게 되었고, 가이 폭스는 영국에서 가장 악명 높은 반역자 중 한 명으로 명성을 알리게 되었습니다.

Under the rule of James 1st, English Catholics had been persecuted for many years.

제임스 1세의 통치 아래 모든 천주교인은 오랜 기간동안 박해를 받아왔습니다.

The 12 Gunpowder Plot conspirators believed that violent action was warranted to end this persecution.

12명의 화약 음모 공모자들은 이 박해를 끝내기 위해 폭력 행위가 정당하다고 믿었습니다.

By blowing up the Houses of Parliament it was intended that they would kill the King, maybe even the Prince of Wales, and the Members of Parliament who were making life difficult for the Catholics.

국회의사당을 폭파함으로써 그들이 왕, 어쩌면 왕자까지, 그리고 가톨릭 신자들의 박해하는 의회 의원들까지 살해하려 했습니다.

But as the group worked on the plot, it became clear that innocent people would be hurt or killed in the attack. Some of the plotters started having second thoughts.

그러나 이 단체가 음모를 계획하면서 무고한 사람들이 그 공격으로 다치거나 죽을 수 있다는 것을 깨닫고, 이 사건이 과연 자신들이 원하는 일인지 다시 뒤돌아보게 되었습니다.

How is Guy Fawkes celebrated in New Zealand?

New Zealanders celebrate the annual festival in the same way as the English do, with bonfires and fireworks lit on the official November 5 night.

키위들은 영국인들과 같은 방식으로 11월 5일 모닥불과 폭죽을 터트리며 이날을 기념합니다.

For kiwis, Guy Fawkes has become an occasion signalling the coming of summer and a chance for family and friends to get together and take in the excitement of spectacular fireworks.

키위들은 이날을 여름의 시작을 알리는 날이라 정하고, 가족이나 친구들과 모여 폭죽을 터트리며 즐깁니다.

Unlike other festivals celebrated in New Zealand, Guy Fawkes does not include any special foods nor are gifts exchanged.

뉴질랜드의 다른 기념일들과는 다르게 특별한 음식이나 선물을 교환하지 않습니다.

Safety Tips from the NZ Fire Service and Police NZ 소방당국과 경찰청의 안전 수칙

The best way to stay safe this Guy Fawkes Night is to attend a public display. 

안전을 위해 가장 좋은 방법은 공개된 장소로 가는 것입니다.

•If you’re lighting your own fireworks, think about your safety.  직접 불을 켤 경우 본인의 안전을 생각하세요.

•Read and follow the instructions on fireworks before using them.  폭죽 사용 전 안내문을 숙지하세요.

•Read them with a torch.  손전등을 이용하여 읽으세요.

•Light in a wide open area away from anything that could catch fire.  인화성 물질과 떨어진 오픈된 공간에서 점화하세요.

•Fireworks and alcohol/drugs are a dangerous combination.  알코올과 약은 위험합니다. 

•Always let an adult light the fireworks.  항상 성인이 점화하세요.

•Keep a bucket of water or a hose handy.  물 양동이나 호스를 가까이 두세요.

•Keep all unlit fireworks in their box or bag until you light them.  사용하지 않는 폭죽은 상자나 가방에 보관하세요.

•Leave dud fireworks alone – trying to relight them is unsafe.  불발 폭죽은 따로 두세요.

•Burns need water for 20 minutes.   화상시 20분 동안 물로 처치해야 합니다.

During the Guy Fawkes period in 2005, there were over 700 fires, dozens of injuries and many thousands of dollars worth of property destroyed. We can’t have a repeat of 2005.

2005년 가이 폭스 기간에 700여 건의 화재와 수십 명이 부상을 당했고 수천 달러의 피해가 있었습니다. 2005년이 다시 반복되어서는 안 됩니다.

•Point fireworks to the stars, not at your mates.  폭죽은 친구가 아닌 별을 향해 겨누세요. 

When can you buy fireworks? 폭죽 구매 가능 기간은?

→ Fireworks can only be sold between November 2 and November 5, the official Guy Fawkes night.

    11월 2일부터 5일 사이만 판매 가능.

•Fireworks cannot be sold to anyone under 18 years of age. 18세 이상만 구매 가능. 

•Retailers caught flaunting the restrictions may be liable to a fine up to $500,000 and spend up to three months in jail. 이 규제를 과시하다 적발된 소매업자들은 50만 달러 이하의 벌금을 물게 되고 3개월 이하의 징역에 처하게 될 수도 있다.
