대화할 때 영어를 좀 더 잘하는 것처럼 들리게 방법 중 하나가 부가 의문문이나 상대방이 하는 말에 호응하는 ‘그래?’ 같은 추임새를 사용하는 것입니다. 간단한 말이지만 자주 헷갈리는 부분이기도 하죠. 이번에 같이 연습해 봅시다

How to express uncertainty 확실하지 않을 때

1) That’s not a real sword, ______?

a. is it

b. isn’t it

2) Which shows less certainty?

a. You’re a writer, aren’t you?

b. You’re not a writer, are you?

3) Which shows less certainty?

a. He might be someone important.

b. He could be someone important.

4) Which shows less certainty?

a. He could be someone important.

b. I think he might be someone important.

5) He might ______ be a writer.

a. maybe

b. perhaps

How to show interest 나의 흥미를 보여주기

1) I'm going to the theatre next week to see a play my brother recommended. 

a. Are you? 

b. Did you? 

2) The party was great but I think I ate something that made me ill. I was in bed until yesterday.

a. Were you? 

b. Do you? 

3) Did you hear that she got engaged, changed her job and moved house all in one week? 

a. Did you? 

b. Really? 

4) Did you know that if you sign up for a subscription for at least 12 months then you get a 25 percent discount? 

a. That’s interesting. 

b. Are you?

1) a. 앞이 is not이므로 긍정으로 묻죠

2) b. 화자의 말하는 톤에 따라 의미가 조금은 다를 수 있지만 b가 less certainty합니다.

3) a. ‘might’가 ‘could’보다는 조금 덜 확실한 경우에 씁니다.

4) a. ‘might’가 ‘could’ 보다 조금 덜 확실 한 경우에 쓰긴 하지만, ‘I think’가 좀 더 확실하게 만듭니다. 화자의 톤도 중요합니다.

1) a. 한국말로는 그래? 이렇게 말하죠. 

2) a. 주의할 것은 항상 같은 시제로 말하는 것입니다. Was였으므로 나도 were하고 해야 합니다.

3) b. 그거 들었니? 라고 했으니까 did you는 말이 안돼는 거죠.

4) a. 같이 사용할 수 있는 말은 Wow! Really! That’s interesting.
