Why is Guy Fawkes Day celebrated in New Zealand?

Guy Fawkes Day is celebrated on 5 November each year in the United Kingdom, New Zealand and in a number of other countries that were formerly a part of the British Empire, with fireworks and bonfires. 

가이 폭스 데이(Guy Fawkes Day)는 매년 11월 5일 영국, 뉴질랜드 및 과거 대영 제국의 일부였던 여러 국가에서 불꽃놀이와 모닥불과 함께 기념됩니다.

Guy Fawkes Day commemorates the failure of the plot by Guy Fawkes and 11 other men to blow up the British Parliament – the “Gunpowder Plot” back in 1605. The men were caught before they could light the barrels of gunpowder. Every year since on 5 November there has been a celebration with fireworks, gunpowder and bonfires, along with a reading in the British Parliament. 

이날은 가이 폭스와 다른 11명의 남자가 영국 의회를 폭파하려는 1605년의 ‘화약 음모’에 실패한 것을 기념합니다. 이들은 화약통에 불을 붙이기도 전에 잡혔습니다. 매년 11월 5일부터 영국 의회에서 낭독과 함께 불꽃놀이, 화약, 모닥불과 함께 축하 행사가 있었습니다.

In New Zealand Guy Fawkes are an occasion to have fun with friends and family to enjoy fireworks. Guy Fawkes Day is not a public holiday in New Zealand. 

뉴질랜드에서의 가이 폭스 데이는 불꽃놀이를 즐기기 위해 친구 및 가족과 함께 즐거운 시간을 보내는 행사입니다. 뉴질랜드에서 Guy Fawkes Day는 공휴일이 아닙니다.

When can you buy fireworks in New Zealand? 

Fireworks are only on sale for four days each year leading to Guy Fawkes in New Zealand. This year you can buy fireworks from the 2nd November to 5th November 2023.

You must be over 18 years old and have valid ID with you to buy fireworks. 

뉴질랜드 가이 폭스 데이 폭죽은 매년 4일간만 판매되며, 올해는 2023년 11월 2일부터 11월 5일까지 불꽃놀이를 구입할 수 있습니다.

폭죽을 사려면 만 18세 이상이어야 하고 신분증이 있어야 합니다.

When can you light your fireworks? 

There are no rules about what days in the years you can set fireworks off, however Auckland Council has prescribed times that you can light them.

In Auckland you are allowed to light fireworks from 5pm to 10:30pm any day of the year on your private property. On New Year’s Eve you are allowed to light them from 5pm to 1am.

일 년 중 며칠 불꽃놀이를 할 수 있는지에 대한 규칙은 없지만 오클랜드 시의회는 불꽃놀이를 할 수 있는 시간을 규정했습니다.

오클랜드에서는 개인 소유지에서 1년 중 언제든지 오후 5시부터 10시 30분까지 불꽃놀이를 할 수 있습니다. 새해 전야에는 오후 5시부터 새벽 1시까지 불꽃놀이를 할 수 있습니다.

Where can you light your fireworks? 

It is best to light fireworks on your own property, far away from anything that could catch fire. You should also show respect to your neighbours, especially those with young children or pets.  

자기 집(소유지)에서 가연성 제품과는 거리를 두고 폭죽놀이 하는 것이 가장 좋습니다. 이웃들, 특히 어린 아이들이나 애완동물이 있는 이웃들을 존중해 주어야 합니다.

There are some rules about where you can watch your fireworks, and these are set by the local councils in New Zealand. In Auckland the council has specified that you cannot light fireworks on council-controlled land such as beaches, park and reserves. You are also not allowed to light fireworks in forests, conservation areas, road surfaces, berms or footpaths on your street.   

폭죽놀이를 어디서 볼 수 있는지에 대한 규정이 있고, 이는 뉴질랜드의 지방 의회에 의해 정해집니다. 오클랜드의 지방 의회는 해변, 공원, 보호구역과 같이 지방 의회가 통제하는 지역에서는 폭죽놀이를 할 수 없다고 명시했습니다. 숲, 보호구역, 도로 표면, 둑이나 인도에서도 폭죽놀이를 할 수 없습니다.

What safety measures should you have in place when lighting fireworks on your private property?   

1. Make sure your children are supervised at all times, and not left unattended with the fireworks. 폭죽놀이를 하면서 자녀분들이 방치되지 않도록 항상 주의하시기를 바랍니다.

2. Have a hose and bucket of water ready to use. 호스와 물을 준비해 두세요.

3. Use a torch to read each of the fireworks instructions before you light them. 불을 붙이기 전에 손전등을 이용해서 설명서를 잘 읽어보세요.

4. Make sure that the  fireworks are not pointed at any person, animal, property or vegetation when you light them. Keep your pets inside. 폭죽에 불을 붙일 때 사람, 동물, 재산, 식물을 향하지 않도록 하세요. 애완동물은 집 안에 두어야 합니다.

5. Do not use fireworks in windy or dry conditions.   바람이 불거나 건조한 상태에서는 폭죽을 사용하지 마십시오.

Can you light bonfires on your private property? 

Bonfires are large open-air fires which historically were used to celebrate Guy Fawkes.  You are not allowed to light a bonfire on residential private land in Auckland at any time. 

모닥불은 대형으로 야외에서 역사적인 가이 폭스(Guy Fawkes)를 기념하기 위해 사용되었습니다. 오클랜드의 주거용 사유지에서는 모닥불을 피울 수 없습니다.

In rural areas bonfires are allowed between 2 November to 5 November each year on your private property, but must be lit during daylight hours and extinguished before nightfall. The bonfire must comply with general fire safety guidelines.  If it is during the Restricted Fire Season you will also need to get a fire permit from Fire and Emergency New Zealand.

지방에서는 매년 11월 2일부터 5일 사이에 개인 소유지에서 모닥불을 피우는 것이 허용되지만, 낮에 불을 붙이고 해가 지기 전에 꺼야 합니다. 모닥불은 일반적인 화재 안전 지침을 준수해야 합니다. 만약 화재 제한 기간에 있다면 Fire and Emergency New Zealand로부터 화재 허가를 받아야 합니다.
